Informal Interactive Hearing

On 18 July, an interactive multi-stakeholder hearing took place at the UN on addressing large movements of refugees and migrants. The hearing brought together representatives from civil society from every regions of the world, that work on various areas relating to refugees, migrants and human rights, as well as refugees and migrants themselves and other stakeholders such as the private sector and trade unions. The hearing was also attended by UN agencies and representatives from some Member States. The hearing provided civil society and other stakeholders with the opportunity to share concerns on and proposals for the outcome document and the Global Compact on Refugees.

During the hearing, numerous civil society organizations called upon Member States to ensure that the results of the Summit will really be translated to changes on the ground for refugees, migrants and host and home societies, and called upon governments to commit to a New Deal: “a new deal that addresses the reasons people need to or choose to leave home, that provides safe passage while protecting their fundamental rights; a deal in which displaced people, refugees and migrants can preserve their family unity, build new lives and access their human rights without discrimination; a deal to build inclusive and diverse societies without xenophobia and racism that are able to welcome newcomers, and thrive together”.
